Absarokee is a community of 1000 located 15 miles
south of Columbus on Montana secondary Highway 78. Historically a
haven for retired people and home to a special breed of independent
small town residents, the community now sees an exploding demand for
real estate caused by the Stillwater Mine located 45 minutes to the
south and recreation buyers, looking for a piece of Montana’s last
best place. Literally a town where neighbors still take the time to
talk about the weather at the post office, Absarokee is in the heart
of some of the best fishing in the world and only minutes from superb
hunting, hiking and camping in the incomparable Beartooth Mountains.
Horse trailers parked in front of the local cafe shows cattle ranching
is still king in Absarokee. Polite kids in the schools and on the
streets show parents and teachers handle situations better than most
places these days. Local banks show exceptional local art regularly
and local fund-raisers are likely to include Shakespeare in the Park
or a fine art ‘fast draw’ and auction.
